If your baby has dry skin, there are some things you’ll need to do as part of your daily care routine. While your baby might not always have ‘baby soft’ skin, it doesn’t mean that it won’t get better. Luckily, there are some simple ways for you to help combat dryness. Whether it’s caused by the cold winter months or your baby's skin condition, there’s no need to panic, everything you need is easily found and attainable.
Does your baby have dry skin?
You probably have noticed your baby showing some of the common signs and symptoms. If you look closely, you will see rough patches, redness or flaking skin. You baby could have one or all of these symptoms. Babies are more susceptible to having dry skin because their skin is super sensitive and prone to drying out. There are many different causes for dryness.
- You may be giving your baby baths in water that is too hot. Hot water is known to wash away the natural oils of the skin that keep your baby moisturized.
- You might be using harsh soaps during bath time. Soaps and bubble baths are responsible for stripping skin of moisture.
- You might have the heat blasted to a toasty temperature. Like hot baths, your skin might be responding to the heat by drying out. So keep an eye on your thermostat.
What can you do about your baby’s dry skin?
If your baby is suffering from mild skin dryness, there are some simple steps you can take to get your baby’s skin feeling soft and supple again.
- Keep your baby’s bath water at a comfortable temperature. Avoid bathing them too long in hot water. Aim for something a little warmer than lukewarm.
- Use fragrance-free soaps or soaps specifically designed for sensitive baby skin.
- Try to avoid turning your heat up too high. Keep your heat around 20 degrees Celsius.
- Make sure your baby has plenty of fluids to drink. Drinking enough fluids will help hydrate your baby’s skin.
- Use moisturizer when you feel your baby has dry skin, and moisturize often.
- Do your baby’s laundry using detergent and fabric softener that’s meant for sensitive skin.
- Purchase a humidifier for your baby’s room. Running a humidifier while your baby sleeps will increase the amount of moisture in the air. If your home is prone to dry air, a humidifier will help.
If you’ve tried a few of these tips and your baby’s dry skin doesn’t go away, don’t hesitate to contact your family doctor. They can help you figure out a plan to care for your baby’s dry skin.
