The Evolution of Wildrose Rodeo AssociationRobbie McDonald was frustrated with some politics in a newly formed amateur rodeo association. Wanting to continue the rodeo tradition he decided to form a new rodeo association in 1980. The North Eastern Alberta Amateur Rodeo Cowboys Association (NEAARCA) started with 50 members and 6 rodeos. The 1st rodeo was held in Hylo, AB. In 1983 the name was changed to Wild Rose Amateur Rodeo Association (WRARA). In 1985 the name became Wild Rose Rodeo Association (WRRA) and in 1990 shortened to Wildrose Rodeo Association (WRA). In 2009 the membership grew to over 600 members. In 1981 the first finals were held in Hobbema with 4 performances. In 1982 they were moved to Mayerthorpe and remained until 1985. In 1986 the finals moved to Barrhead. The first President was Billy Sands, Vice-President was Robbie McDonald and the Secretary was Mary McDonald. WRA uses the point system instead of money for our contestants to make the finals. The WRA has events for every member of the family. We are very thankful for all our great sponsors without them we wouldn't have such a great Association.more...See more text
