High school sweethearts Nicholas and Angela Popoff broke into the restaurant industry, to some degree, by unconventional means. Nicholas landed a kitchen job at the same restaurant as his sister, thanks to her influence. During his interview (a mere formality), the manager spotted Angela outside in their Jeep and offered her a job on the spot. That was in 1998.
Today, they work along side each other, Nicholas, CEO and Angela, CFO of their founding company Gem Hospitality Group, a family of independent brands: ONYX | steak seafood bar, Pearl Bistro & Oyster Bar, Jaded Wines and Aquamarine Catering. "We're passionate about hospitality as a whole, not just any one specific genre of food," says Nicholas. "As a hospitality group, we assess market needs, just as we did with Pearl, we did the same with ONYX; we felt the market needed a steak-primary restaurant."
