Jigoro Kano was born October 28, 1860 in Mikage Japan. He is the founder of Kodokan Judo. Born at the dawn of the Meiji era, a period of outward and cultural renewal, Jigoro Kano is the youngest of five children. He grew up in a wealthy family; his parents owned a brewery sake. At nine, he lost his mother. His father was then appointed to Tokyo. Schoolboy and brilliant student, he is very interested in Western culture.
