First time at this place. We always like to try it because of the ship in the front. ....hehehe. and we were not disappointed. The seafood was so fresh and the service was good. We could not ask for more.
We went with a group of friends before the theatre, we had been there before for a family function and loved it so we decided to bring friends. Great portuguese food and service. We all ordered the seafood platter with salads and had the cod cakes for an appetizer. the fish was done just right (lightl fried) and tasted very fresh. The shell fish on the platter was done in a spicy sauce that was so good. The portions were plentiful and you could easily bring some home. The wine selection was not familiar as it was all portuguese. I asked the waitress for help and she brought me the charismatic owner who took us on a tour of his private wine cellar --it was amazing and I was quite suprised that this place was so big on the inside since the outside seems so small! Both times we have been to Venturas the food and servcie have been good, our friends also enjoyed it and we all agreed that we will come back.
We went to Ventura's from a recommendation and were reall suprised. First the size of restaurant is very very deceiving from the outside it appears to be a small place and when you walk in its huge with 2 or three dining rooms. We were greeted and seated quickly. We decided to order a meal to share between us two and upon the recommendation from the friendly waitress we ordered only "traditional" portuguese dishes. A pork dish, halibut, chorizo, these fish cakes (yum) and a portuguese kale like soup. The food was very favourful and i must say the portions were huge. We were also very impressed with the unique "old" european boat like decor it reminded me of the type of restaurants I have visited in Europe. There were alot of artifacts and portuguese cultural things. The waitress was chatty and helpful explaining details about the food and she gave us some history on the restaurant, its family owned and operated which is kinda nice and rare these days and that all the food is made to order. We enjoyed this restaurant as the food was delicious and there was a "homey" feeling to this restaurant that I liked. My husband and I enjoyed it and will be returning with friends. Great addition to Hamilton.
Worst place ever. Service was very rude and unprofessional and the food was horrible. Rice was over cooked and fish was under cooked. The food was so gross that we didn't even eat and went to get a burger. Expensive and totally not worth the money. Will never return again.
Great Birthday suprise!! We had been meaning to visit this restaurant for a long time. We were seated at a beautiful table near a real wood burning fireplace. The waitress was very friendly I think she was the daughter of the owner; the owner at one point came to greet us even though they were busy which I though was very nice. Inside this restaurant was beautiful with the feel of the inside of an old boat, the decor was absolutely stunning with artifacts everywhere. The menu was big with a lot of variety. We picked the mussels for an appetizer along with the Portuguese "chorizo" they were great very tasty especially the mussels. We then went with the Fruits of the Sea platters for our group. Let me say OMG you will not leave hungry they were awesome!!!!and huge!!!! It had 3 or 4 different types of fish, shrimp, calamari, rice, potatoes other stuff too but I can't remember all of it. We then ordered dessert; we were told that all the desserts are made in house which is impressive. I had the Custard from heaven which was awesome my husband chose the cheesecake and it was good too. Overall it was a great birthday with good service, great food and great company. I would return and we recommend this restaurant.
Loved the menu it had lots of variety. The food was very fresh and you could tell there was alot of pride in what they served. We enjoyed everything we ordered! The waitress was also very nice with a huge smile, we will certainly return.
My hsband and I like to try different restaurants for dinner. We drove by this place before and thought that we would give it a try. We were extremely disappointed with the service, the food, and the prices. The steak was tough, the shrimp were overspiced, and the place was over priced.
Feels just like a typical portuguese restaurant in the old country! My family goes all the time and we love it, great food and service.
4 of us had a few appetizers and i found them to be bland and we decided to finish with the king platter. this platter was suitable for a peasant let alone a king. too dry and boring. no creativity. Typical place that trys to let the decor of the restaurant speak for the food. Don't waste your time!
we all had a great time, the food was excellent, the service was good too, they made us feel very at home. The restaurant is beautiful with alot of detail-the server told us it is family owned which is nice. The waitress was very friendly and talkative. We were recommend by family and friends and we enjoyed it very much and will be returning. Great JOB!!
I was really disappointed with the the quality of food for the price in such a beautiful restaurant. The pork was good, but not very special. The grilled haddock tasted awful, I can't even put my finger on what was wrong. But our server was really nice, and seemed eager for us to like it, so I didn't say anything. I tried to eat half of it, but there were bones in it too. I also wasn't sure if maybe my palate is not accustomed to portuguese food. The potatoes were and veg were very plain, so seasoning, bothe appeared to be boiled and steams respectively. I might try to eat here again, because the reviews are so varied, maybe we came on a bad day.
We go often and enjoy this restaurant very much, the owner makes us feel right at home. The food is fresh and reminds us of portugal. We bring friends all the time.
terrible service , waited forever, fish over done and too oily.It wasn't even busy, they were out of everything just not a good experience.
beautiful restaurant with great food, service was excellent! It reminded me very much of Portugal, a very quaint restaurant.
I eat here on occasion, usually as a single, and service and food are always solid. I usually have the pork cutlet or the beef and they're stuff-the-belly kind of meals, simple and flavourful. The wine list is very good for this city--a small selection of stylish Portuguese wines.
As soon as we arrived nothing but attitude. It took forever to get served and the platter was like it was slapped together. We were put at a different table, found out later that we would have been beside some lawyers, I guess he doesn't like catering to the middle class. The owner / waiter made no apologies just smart comments, like it was an honor to be there. It is a nice looking restaurant but the service and food will keep me away!
The service was great, fast and friendly...charming owner. The food was fresh, deliscious and the atmosphere was very homey--the owner explained that it was a family owned business. one huge recommendation--- try this dessert called "custard from heaven" --it was so delicious everyone at my table was wanting some.
We were recommended by freinds to go to ventura's, which we did, and what a beautiful restaurant. It was stunning inside and the food was awesome, portions were huge and the service was also good. I was a little shocked to read the reviews about service because our server was wonderful, and the owner came to our table to welcome us to his family owned restaurant. If you go do get the seafood platters as they were AWESOME!
In terms of decor, it is indeed quite beautiful inside, all rustic wood, tablecloths, ample space, etc. The food itself was "ok". The seafood platter included whitefish/calamari and shrimp (all good), and a TERRIBLY oversalted cod. As this restaurant carries many cod dishes, we wondered if they are all prepared so salty. The rice and potatoes were ok as well. Nothing waa "fantastic". Really the thing to complain about was the S-L-O-W service. We arrived with reservations on a typical Saturday night at 8pm. The restaurant certainly was not full. It took 50 minutes to receive our soup, and another 30 after that for the main. The staff was aware this was taking too long. The waitress explained to us that it is better to arrive not in prime time, but after 8pm (which is when we DID arrive!). Then she went on to say that the kitchen will be doubling in size to accomodate more cooks, which made us assume the slow service has been an issue for a while. The owner also came up and tried to explain that often couples wait longer to be served, as his cooks prefer to prepare meals for larger groups.
Seafood platter was a heaping, generous, and perfectly executed assortment of the most succulent and fresh Portuguese-style fish and shellfish. For the price (36.99), this included enough to literally feed a family of four! Lightly battered fish complimented plump shrimp and mussels in a housemade tomato-based sauce. The wine ($30 a bottle) also wonderfully aromatic and reasonably priced.
