In operation since 1981, Studio du verre is a staple of Montreal’s arts and crafts scene. Creating beautiful stained glass pieces and hosting classes and workshops where artisans of any level of experience can engage with the craft have been Jeff Schekman’s and Garth Jenkin’s focus for many years now.
"We met in 1981; I was more rooted in studio work, and Garth was a high school teacher," Jeff recalls of Studio du verre’s early days. "I’m from the United States and came here to study music at McGill, and Garth hails from Ontario and was teaching here. In the late 70s, the arts and crafts field was very popular; people were attracted to creating things with their own hands. I quit studying music, and I got into stained glass. Garth learned the craft too, feeling too constrained in his career, and that’s sort of how we joined forces to create Studio du verre."
Decades later, Jeff and Garth are still going strong; educating Montreal’s creative minds on the ins and outs of stained glass and creating unique pieces that are testimonials to their mastery of the craft.
