My favorite asian food restaurant in the Quinte Area by far as I am not a big fan of the local buffets.
My only wish is that they would serve delicious Pho. The vermicelli dish with spring rolls and grilled pork is a delight. The lemon grass dish is another treat. Wonton soup is hot and yummy.
Service is excellent. At times, it can get busy during the lunch rush, I did not have any problems. Take out is just as good.
The interior decor is very nice as well. The parking is never a problem in the King George Square.Read more

After a long drive from Hamilton I was ready to eat anything, and this was in sight from where I had to go. As soon as my business was done I headed in, not realising that it was already 9:15 and they close at 9:30 on a Monday. After I had filled my first plate the hostess informed me of the closing time, but she said that I was welcome to fill up as many plates as I liked and eat at my leisure while they packed up. So I did, and washed them down with a Tsing Tao. I found the food to be the equal of other buffets I have visited, just wish I could have had more time, but that wasn't their fault.Read more

This review is for early December 2010. Group of about 12 people for lunch buffet on a weekday. I believe the total cost with a pop was about $14 each including tip and tax so that was great.
As in my other review, we felt like Kingston had no decent Chinese until Panda Garden came along. We've had buffet there several times as party of two but this was the first bigger group. We had called ahead for a table, which was smart as the place was full for lunch.
The buffet for Panda Garden was always impressive for variety and regular turnover/top-ups of the hot dishes but they expanded a couple of years ago to try some basic Thai and sushi dishes. The Thai and sushi are not the world's greatest but they are fine and nice for variety and that's ok because Kingston has so many other specialty restaurants for that if you want it.
The variety of ice cream and desserts, as mentioned in other reviews, is impressive though we rarely make space for it in our multiple tours around the hot and cold stuff.
What we enjoy about the buffet are:
- wonton soup with green onions on the side if you like to add them
- egg rolls
- sweet and sour chicken balls
- General Tao chicken
- other beef and vegetable dishes depending on what's there that day
We find going in around 4:30-4:45pm on weekdays when the dinner service is getting started is ideal. Everything is fresh and hot and not as crowded as it is at 5:00pm or later. We haven't had a problem with food sitting around but then we don't try to go for buffet at mid-afternoon either.
We have always found the buffet servers to be pleasant and efficient with taking away dirty plates, topping up soft drinks and preparing the bill. Atmosphere is clean and pleasant with ample space to walk around with plates of food.Read more

Phnom Penh may distract or even confuse you with its quirky interior, but its friendly service and mouth watering cuisine make up for all of that.
It’s late spring; Summer is on the verge of taking over, but it’s not apparent today. Though the temperature is mild, rain has been pounding down in erratic spurts throughout the morning.
The restaurant is located on King St. East just off of Princess St. It is away from the bustling vehicles, but still close enough to feel the excitement radiating from “the Heart of Kingston.”
I escape the daggers of rain and duck into the rustic building.
I am greeted promptly and warmly by a waiter and given a table. I’m impressed with the service at this point.
Once at my table, I take a look around.
The walls are splashed with deep reds and greens and large landscapes hang delicately around the room. It feels quaint at first glance, but then I’m slightly confused.
They are offering me Thai and Cambodian cuisine, but the paintings are clearly from all different cultures and there are paper lanterns and Christmas lights decorating the restaurant. Maybe it isn’t just me who’s confused about ethnicity.
The waiter returns in a mere moment with water and menus. Again, I am impressed.
That is until the glass draws my attention to the small and slightly sticky table in front of me.
Owner and chef, Lay Soleak, emerges from the kitchen for a light conversation. Though this may seem over the top, he repeats his actions when the next group comes in. It isn’t special treatment for a critic; it’s just the way he is.
During the conversation, I learn that Soleak took over the restaurant in November of last year. Phnom Penh is his first venture.
He has no official training in cuisine, but comes from Cambodia where he learned about the food. The last owners also showed him a thing or two before they left. I’ll see if it’s enough.
I order Thai Curry ($10)—this price reflects the rest of the menu—and wait only minutes until the food is brought to me.
The plate is placed in front of me and I am overwhelmed by the sheer size of the helping. But quality trumps quantity.
On my dish are a number of items: strips of chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans and a side of rice. This is all smothered in red curry sauce. Though not exactly a pretty presentation, I am very tempted by this meal.
The spices of the curry sauce bounce in the air around me, pulling the envious stares of my fellow diners toward my plate.
Without another second of hesitation, I jump into my first ever experience with Thai food.
At first, all I can taste is the sauce; it is an explosion of flavour. Though it has a kick, it is not completely overwhelming like the green curry sauce—an option that is offered with this dish.
The broccoli and cauliflower are cooked to perfection and soaked in the hot curry sauce. My teeth grind down, crumbling them to nothing but flavour.
The white rice is cold and lacks all aspects of life, especially colour. Though it cannot stand on its own, a splash of the fiery sauce changes all of that.
The chicken is tantalizingly slippery with sauce. And unlike other places, they are not skimpy with their meat. There is more than enough on my plate.
Individually, these ingredients are not so special, but together, the succulent vegetables, mild chicken, plain rice and red curry sauce, create a sublime puzzle of food, fitting together deliciously.
Though the interior with its mismatched themes and objects is somewhat tacky, there are many upsides to eating at Phnom Penh.
The quality of the cuisine is as large as the quality, but the price isn’t. The amount of food you receive for $10 is unreal; it’s sure to fill anyone.
And it’s anyone that eats here. All different people come to this restaurant when they do, they are sure to find exactly what the menu offers: “exotic and delightful Thai and Cambodian cuisine.”
It’s good food at a good pricRead more

Returned here to friendly smiles after being far away from the area for 15 years.
Since 123 was established in 1998, it has clearly and consistently maintained a very high standard in the skill of their chefs and serving simply superb and delicious traditional/popular new world Chinese food.
123 isn't a restaurant and perhaps that is in its favour as a take out and away service where the emphasis is entirely on the food and the quality of the cooking. So, as far as 'atmosphere' goes, it gets a 5 star rating for not having one! Place your order and it is filled efficiently and on time. They deliver in Cobourg but it's also no wonder that people drive in from all around to pick up. This place is that good.
I cannot ever recall a dish from 123 that was disappointing. If there is a weakness, (that might be considered a strength from a business perspective) it might be in the limitation of the menu where one might not find a dish or two that is commonly found elsewhere. Still their success is obviously in providing enough variety in key Cantonese, "Hong Kong", Szechuan and new world dishes to satisfy the majority of people.
If you are used to ordering 'off menu' and asking for favours in combinations of things, you won't find that at 123. Perhaps if one was to get to know the chef personally after several visits and face to face that could be done but that's not a part of their formula.
Of course, a necessity in Chinese cooking (and anything outside of a crock pot) is the freshness of ingredients and here is where 123 delivers. The veggies crunch, the wraps and breadings are crisp and the meats are tender. Nothing soggy as in so many other places. The crispy fried won ton are incredible. They're big and fresh and crunchy!
The Lemon Chicken is presented in little thinly breaded chicken bites that can be lifted with your chopsticks and dipped into the delicious lemon sauce. We loved the spicy curried Singapore Rice Noodles, the Happy Family (a combination of meats and veggies) as well as the San Goo Guy Pan and Beef with Chinese Green. The honey garlic ribs were fresh and tender; not 'stringy' or tough. The fried rice is outstanding.
This place and the people who make it happen deserve the custom they receive. What a pleasure.Read more

Dropped in for lunch this week and was very pleasantly surprised to find this calibre of Japanese food in Peterborough. Excellent food. Very authentic. So much so it helps to be familiar with Japanese food before ordering (staff speak very little English). Fixed price for as much as you want on the menu. However a note on menu says you will be charged for what you don't eat. I thought that was an inspired way to prevent the waste usually associated with all you can eat restaurants. A little pricy but you certainly get your money's worth. Looking forward to a return visit for dinner.Read more
